Lithuania road safety: Fatalities down 14% despite rising accident rates

Traffic statistics in Lithuania show a 14% decrease in road fatalities during the first nine months of the year, according to the Transport Competence Agency (TKA). However, the total number of traffic accidents involving casualties has risen by 2% compared to the same period last year. Police data indicates that between January and September, nearly 2,200 accidents with casualties occurred, resulting in 86 deaths and 2,510 injuries.

Specific accident types remain high-risk; run-off-road incidents and head-on collisions account for 42% of all road deaths. Notably, fatalities from head-on collisions increased by 52%, rising from 21 to 32 cases.

Seasonal changes are also impacting safety. Data from the TKA shows that pedestrian accidents increase by approximately 30% during the autumn months compared to summer. Additionally, as daylight hours decrease, the proportion of accidents occurring in darkness is rising, with 22% of all accidents in the autumn occurring during dark hours.
