Lithuania road safety: Pedestrian accidents rise 30 percent in autumn
Data from the Transport Competence Agency (TKA) indicates that declining visibility during autumn is significantly impacting road safety in Lithuania. While the total number of recorded traffic accidents is lower in autumn compared to summer, collisions involving pedestrians have increased by 30 percent.
Other vehicle-related accidents have seen a decline during this period, with bicycle collisions dropping by approximately half, motorcycle collisions decreasing by 52 percent, and moped accidents falling by about 43 percent. However, the reduction in daylight hours, combined with rain and fog, poses a heightened risk.
The proportion of accidents occurring in darkness is rising sharply as winter approaches. In September, 10 percent of accidents occurred in the dark, increasing to 23 percent in October, and reaching 39 percent in November. TKA communications lead Živilė Burdaitė advises drivers to adjust speeds and maintain safe distances, while urging pedestrians to use reflective gear to improve visibility.
