Lithuania sees rise in regional businesses and high-value niches
A recent analysis by the Innovation Agency reveals a growing number of new businesses in Lithuania's regions, specifically within high-value-added (HVA) sectors. The study identified 44 established and 39 emerging HVA niches across various counties, ranging from engineering services to the manufacturing of electrical equipment and vehicles.
Last year, Lithuania registered 14,939 new companies, the highest number in five years. For the second consecutive year, regional areas have outperformed the capital in terms of new business registrations, with 7,739 companies registered in the Central and Western Lithuania regions compared to 7,200 in the Capital region.
Despite this growth, value creation remains unevenly distributed. The Vilnius county accounted for 75.3 percent of the country's total HVA sector value and employed 63.9 percent of its workers. In contrast, five smaller counties—Alytus, Marijampolė, Telšiai, Utena, and Tauragė—collectively employed only 4.1 percent of the HVA workforce. Economy and Innovation Minister Edvinas Grikšas noted that strengthening regional competitiveness and attracting investors are key to moving companies up the value chain and into international markets.
