Lithuania sees surge in single-person households
Single-person households in Lithuania have seen a significant rise, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all households in 2025. According to Eurostat data, the proportion of one-person households in Lithuania grew from approximately 43% in 2016 to 63% in 2025. This figure is the highest in the European Union, where the average for such households stands at about 38%.
This demographic shift is altering real estate demand, with an increasing focus on smaller, well-planned apartments. Marijonas Chmieliauskas, sales director at Realco, notes that one- and two-room apartments are highly sought after, not only for living but also as investment properties. Realco’s current supply reflects this, with two-room apartments making up 50% of offerings and one-room apartments accounting for 16%.
Architect Aistė Kuncevičiūtė-Gudelienė observes that small apartments are no longer viewed merely as temporary compromises. Instead, they are being consciously chosen by active urban professionals who prioritize location and quality of life over total square footage. The emphasis in modern design is shifting toward space efficiency and functionality within smaller footprints.
