Lithuania Seimas repeals education exam requirement changes

The Lithuanian Seimas has repealed a previous amendment to the Law on Education. The overturned regulation had removed the requirement for students to achieve at least a grade of four in the 20th-grade basic education achievement tests to obtain secondary education.

Proponents of the change cited the need for system stability and the reduction of student stress. However, critics express concern that lowering academic requirements may lead to declining educational standards. This follows an OECD report indicating that 44 percent of Lithuanian adults possess only low basic skills in reading and mathematics, struggling with simple instructions and everyday calculations.
