Lithuania strengthens naval defense amid European drone threat warnings

Lithuania has signed a €5.8 million industrial cooperation agreement to acquire Sea Hawk DS30M cannon systems to protect its naval vessels from aerial threats, including drones. The systems utilize Airburst technology and programmable ammunition to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, loitering munitions, and fast-moving coastal craft. This acquisition includes advanced sensors and integration into the Lithuanian Navy to strengthen maritime defense capabilities.

Separately, intelligence warnings have highlighted potential Russian drone operations targeting European nations. Reports suggest Russia may use Gerbera drones, which could be launched from merchant ships in the Mediterranean to target Spain, France, or Italy. These drones, capable of traveling up to 600 kilometers, could be used to cause fires, damage infrastructure, or disrupt port and airport operations, aiming for political and economic impact.
