Lithuania to make land boundary markers optional by 2026

Starting July 1, 2026, the marking of land plot boundaries with physical boundary markers will no longer be mandatory in Lithuania. Landowners or state/municipal trustees may decide whether physical markers are necessary for their plots.

Decisions regarding the use of markers must be formalized in a boundary marking-demonstration act prepared by a surveyor. The absence of physical markers does not change the plot boundaries registered in the Real Estate Register, as boundaries are determined by stable coordinates in the state coordinate system.

The State Territorial Planning and Construction Inspection (VTPSI) recommends that owners do not rush to abandon markers without carefully assessing the situation. While the change aims to assist farmers and land users by preventing damage to markers during agricultural work, the VTPSI emphasizes that legal clarity regarding boundaries is maintained through the official Real Estate Register.
