Lithuania to provide €160 million for business packaging transitions
Lithuanian businesses are preparing for significant shifts in production and packaging driven by the new European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. The regulation, which entered into force on February 11, 2025, with most provisions applicable from August 12, 2026, mandates stricter requirements for packaging sustainability, labeling, chemical composition, and recyclability.
These changes will impact various sectors, including food, cosmetics, household chemicals, electronics, e-commerce, and furniture. Companies must now consider the entire lifecycle of their packaging, focusing on reducing excess material, increasing the use of recycled content, and ensuring ease of recycling. The Lithuanian Ministry of Environment is currently aligning national legislation with the EU regulation, which includes designing packaging for recyclability and potentially banning certain types of packaging by 2030.
To support the transition, the state has pledged 160 million euros in financial assistance to help businesses manage the costs associated with these new environmental standards and the shift toward a circular economy.
