Lithuania to introduce universal male conscription in 2032

Lithuania has decided to implement universal military conscription for all young men starting in 2032, according to President Gitanas Nauseda. The decision was reached during a meeting of the State Defense Council in Vilnius to strengthen national defense amid heightened geopolitical tensions with Russia.

Under the new plan, annual recruitment is expected to increase from over 5,000 to approximately 7,500 men, accounting for demographic trends and health exemptions. Women will continue to serve in the military on a voluntary basis. To prepare for this transition, the government aims to invest in expanded accommodation facilities and the training of approximately 300 additional instructors.

The State Defense Council also agreed to diversify service roles. Conscripts may be trained as drone operators or assigned to support the State Border Guard Service, fire departments, or rescue teams. The transition is estimated to cost between 100 and 120 million euros. This move follows Lithuania’s 2015 reinstatement of partial conscription, which was prompted by the annexation of Crimea.
