Lithuania wildlife rutting season begins

The rutting season for red deer and moose has begun in the forests of Lithuania. During this period, male animals become more active, compete with one another, and may wander into unfamiliar territories, making them less cautious and more likely to cross roads unexpectedly.

The Environmental Protection Department has issued reminders for both hunters and drivers. Drivers are urged to exercise increased caution on roads, particularly in forested areas, due to the risk of animals suddenly entering the roadway.

Hunters are reminded to strictly adhere to hunting regulations. For red deer and moose, the use of night vision, thermal imaging sights, or spotlights is prohibited. Hunting is permitted only during daylight hours, specifically not earlier than 1.5 hours before sunrise and not later than 1.5 hours after sunset. Additionally, hunters must wear bright orange or yellow clothing and possess all required documentation, including a valid hunting permit and identification.
