Lithuanian Basketball Federation faces leadership crisis
The Lithuanian Basketball Federation (ALK) is facing a leadership crisis following the resignation of President Mindaugas Balčiūnas and head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis. Balčiūnas stepped down to reduce public tension and aggression, citing an unsustainable environment. His departure follows months of criticism regarding the men's national team's performance, lack of financial transparency, and the scandal involving former women's team coach Rimantas Grigas, who received a five-year FIBA suspension and a fine for harassment.
Simultaneously, head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis and his entire coaching staff have resigned. Kurtinaitis stated that the timing would allow a new staff sufficient time to prepare for upcoming qualification windows.
Remigijus Milašius, the current head of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), has been appointed to temporarily lead the Executive Committee. The Federation's committee is scheduled to meet in mid-September to determine the date for new presidential elections, which are expected to take place in late October or early November.
