Lithuanian cities' urban design linked to stronger community ties

Rapid urbanisation in Lithuania has increased housing density while many residents report growing loneliness and weaker neighbourhood connections. Experts say the problem is less about people’s willingness to interact and more about the lack of shared public spaces – the so‑called “third places” where residents can meet, relax and engage outside home and work.

Groupinvest’s director Edvardas Račevskis notes that modern neighbourhoods often turn courtyards into parking areas, limiting opportunities for casual encounters. He stresses that “community begins where people can simply be together in the same space.” A recent international study published in *Scientific Reports* supports this view, finding that quality communal areas significantly boost social bonds and reduce feelings of isolation.

Vilnius is applying the concept in the “Kvepia mėtom” project, which moves car parking underground and creates green, child‑friendly courtyards for leisure and community activities. Planners hope such designs will foster stronger neighbourhood ties across Lithuanian cities.
