Lithuanian consumers warned of hidden costs in small loans

Financial experts in Lithuania caution that small consumer loans, often perceived as quick fixes for unexpected expenses, can carry hidden costs that outweigh their modest size. Luminor bank’s client‑acquisition manager Rūta Mylė explains that borrowers tend to focus on low monthly payments and overlook the total loan price, including interest and administrative fees, leading to higher overall repayment.

At the same time, a study cited by Urbo bank’s Business Services Director Julius Ivaška highlights a phenomenon he calls “lifestyle inflation,” where higher incomes prompt proportionally higher spending on upgraded goods and services. This behavior reduces the ability of higher‑earning households to build savings, despite increased earnings. Both experts advise consumers to compare multiple offers, consider the full cost of credit, and maintain a financial reserve to avoid reliance on short‑term borrowing.
