Lithuanian farmers face rising livestock losses from wolves

Farmers in Lithuania, particularly in the Telšiai district, are facing increased challenges due to rising wolf activity. The growing wolf population is leading to more frequent attacks on livestock, specifically targeting sheep, goats, and calves. This trend is notably more pronounced during the autumn months as young wolves learn to hunt.

Vilma Lukoševičienė, head of the Rural Development Department at the Telšiai District Municipality, noted that attacks have been recorded in the Tryškiai, Žarėnai, and Varniai elderships. A significant challenge for authorities is the timely assessment of damage, as some farmers dispose of carcasses or clear incident sites before municipal commissions can arrive to document the loss.

To mitigate these risks, Lithuanian farmers can apply for support under the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan for Agriculture and Rural Development. A total of 1,149,946 euros has been allocated for measures to prevent damage from large predators. Applications for funding, which covers items such as electric fencing and other protective equipment, are being accepted until November 30.
