Lithuanian government strengthens food supply preparedness for crisis

The Lithuanian government approved a decision assigning specific tasks to state institutions to guarantee the operation of designated food and essential‑goods outlets during a full or partial mobilization. The legal framework ensures that, even if banking systems are disrupted, residents can purchase basic food items at the 207 listed physical shops, with payment and security rules following the Bank of Lithuania’s regulations.

Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, said the move shifts from creating a model of backup stores to testing and solidifying the entire supply chain, covering production, logistics, staffing and uninterrupted access to essential products. The Ministry of Agriculture will conclude mobilization contracts with traders and producers, maintain a state reserve of food and medicines, and conduct public auctions to secure supply at the lowest reservation price. The list of eligible outlets will be published only after a mobilization decree is issued.
