Lithuanian health insurance certificate replaces EU card for travelers

The State Social Insurance Fund Board (VLK) advises that Lithuanian citizens travelling in the European Union can obtain a digital certificate that grants the same emergency medical rights as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The certificate can be created online in a few minutes, stored on a phone, and is issued even while abroad.

In 2023 the VLK issued about 23,000 certificates, reflecting growing use of the fast‑track option. The certificate is valid in all EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, covering urgent care, trauma, sudden illness, chronic disease flare‑ups and pregnancy‑related services. It does not cover planned treatment, private‑sector care, or additional costs such as transport back to Lithuania or co‑payments.

Parents can also apply for certificates for their minor children through the same online portal, ensuring family members are covered during summer holidays and other trips abroad.
