Lithuanian higher education leaders welcome international students
Leaders of Lithuanian higher education institutions have expressed strong support for attracting international students, noting that global talent benefits the country's economy, research, and competitiveness. During a discussion in the Seimas, officials highlighted that Lithuanian science has become globally desirable, with institutions increasing student numbers and raising admission standards.
To further enhance international appeal, discussions are underway regarding the National Human Resources Competence Development Act. While some officials have raised concerns regarding residency permits for foreign students, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius stated that international students are “welcome,” though he suggested “hygienic” background checks may be necessary for those seeking residency.
In a separate academic development, Klaipėda University emphasized the importance of university autonomy and academic freedom during the Magna Charta Universitatum conference in Vilnius. Participants argued that independent universities are essential for a democratic society, as they allow for the pursuit of truth and science-based insights even when they challenge political norms.
