Lithuanian lakes safe for swimming, Vievio Lake flagged for high bacteria

Water‑quality testing in the Elektrėnai municipality showed that most local bathing sites meet Lithuanian hygiene standards, with clean water and no visible pollution. However, the swimming area of Vievio Lake recorded enterococci levels above the allowed limit, prompting health officials to advise swimmers to avoid ingesting the water, protect open wounds and eyes, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.

Separate analyses by the National Public Health Laboratory in Vilnius of recreational waters in the Ukmergė district confirmed that all sampled lakes and ponds comply with national quality requirements, contain no hazardous debris, and are safe for swimming. Residents are encouraged to use well‑monitored locations to minimise the risk of gastrointestinal or skin infections.
