Ukmergė introduces free public transport and electric buses

Ukmergė is implementing free public transport for all city routes starting September 1. This decision follows a coalition program agreement and aims to increase the attractiveness of public transit and reduce car usage.

In conjunction with this policy change, the Ukmergė bus park has modernized its fleet by acquiring 10 new electric vehicles, including Zhongtong N12, IVECO Feniksbus, and IVECO Eforcity models. The project includes the installation of charging stations and a solar power plant with an energy storage system to ensure eco-friendly charging. While city routes will be free, suburban routes remain paid.

Discussions within the Ukmergė District Municipality Council highlighted differing views on the model. While the majority supported the move, some members questioned whether total free transit is the most effective tool, suggesting that funds might be better spent on increasing frequency and improving schedules to better compete with private vehicles.
