Lithuanian officials urge grid reforms following severe storm damage

Following a severe storm in August that disrupted electricity for over 268,000 ESO customers, Lithuanian officials and agricultural representatives are calling for urgent reforms to the national power grid. During a meeting of the Seimas Committee on Agriculture, the Lithuanian Young Farmers and Youth Union (LJŪJS) urged the government to prioritize energy independence for farms to ensure food production continuity. They noted that electricity is vital for livestock feeding, milking, ventilation, and refrigeration, and criticized current restrictions that prevent farms from generating their own solar power due to grid capacity issues.

Speaker of the Seimas Jonas Olekas criticized ESO for failing to draw sufficient lessons from the storm's impact. He questioned the effectiveness of previous investments in cabling and criticized the company's restructuring, which involved closing regional branches, as a factor that slowed power restoration. As of Wednesday, approximately 1,800 customers remained without electricity.

In response to the disaster, which caused one death and multiple injuries, the government declared a state of emergency. ESO reported receiving over 5,000 compensation claims from residents for direct storm losses. A simplified compensation process is available for private customers whose electricity service was restored more than 72 hours after the storm.
