Lithuanian Žolinės traditions celebrated in Krekenava and Šiauliai

Lithuania is celebrating the traditional Žolinės festivities, with major events scheduled in Krekenava and Šiauliai.

In Krekenava, the festivities run from August 14 to 21, centered around the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A highlight of the celebration includes a 100-meter long wreath made of greenery to decorate the basilica. The program features religious services, traditional crafts fairs, and musical performances by artists such as Sakalas Čumačenko, the group Biplan, and various ensembles celebrating the Year of the Kanklės, including Šilko stygų and Knipati.

In Šiauliai, celebrations will take place at the Žaliūkių Miller's Homestead-Museum and the Vilnius University Šiauliai Academy Botanical Garden. The museum event includes a Kanklės exhibition, a meeting with instrument maker Albertas Martinaitis, and traditional rituals such as seven-herb tea and folk music performances. The Botanical Garden will host celebrations involving music, exhibitions, and educational activities, including a display from the Šiauliai Aušra Museum.
