Lithuanian parcel locker companies face investigation over accessibility
Lithuanian authorities have launched an investigation into parcel locker companies following reports of discrimination against people with mobility disabilities. Findings indicate that many parcel compartments are positioned too high for wheelchair users to reach, and customers lack the ability to select specific accessible compartments.
Issues also arise when automated systems redirect parcels to alternative terminals that may be located in inaccessible areas. In response, DPD Lietuva stated that compartment assignment is an automated process based on parcel flow and availability, making it currently impossible to reserve lower compartments without disrupting logistics management.
Omniva LT noted that they do not receive individual accessibility requirements from retailers, preventing them from identifying specific needs during sorting, though they are considering the deployment of more adapted terminals. Venipak Lietuva, which initiated discussions with the authorities, confirmed that while couriers currently decide compartment placement based on occupancy, the company is planning technical solutions to improve accessibility and allow for compartment selection.
