Lithuanian PM denies allegations regarding wife's employment

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius and his wife, Aistė Sinkevičienė, have responded to investigative reports regarding her professional appointments. The controversy follows an LRT investigation alleging that a Public and International Relations department was established in the Kaunas District Municipality specifically to facilitate Sinkevičienė’s appointment as a civil servant without a competitive process following her maternity leave.

Sinkevičienė has denied these claims, stating that the department was actually created more than a year after her return from maternity leave. She also addressed her part-time role at the Raudondvaras Estate, explaining that her work involving text, visual materials, and layout design does not require public contact information. She maintains that her appointments followed all legal procedures.

The Prime Minister expressed pride in his wife’s professional path and asserted that the information presented in the investigation is distorted and inaccurate. Meanwhile, opposition members in the Seimas have called for an investigation, and the parliamentary Anti-Corruption Commission is expected to decide next week whether to launch a formal inquiry.
