Lithuanian Prime Minister Sinkevičius plans defense funding and pension surplus allocation

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said Lithuania must seek a broad political agreement to finance its defence beyond 2030, emphasizing the need to develop a domestic defence industry as well as secure funding for the armed forces. He noted ongoing examinations of foreign practices on limiting minors’ access to social media and indicated that discussions on mobile‑phone restrictions in schools will resume in the autumn.

The government also backs President Gitanas Nausėda’s proposal to divert a portion of the annual surplus of the State Social Insurance Fund (Sodra) to increase pension benefits. Officials expect the share earmarked for pensions to be around 15 percent of the surplus, lower than the president’s 20 percent suggestion, with ongoing talks between the Social Security and Finance ministries shaping the final decision.
