Lithuanian schools face shortage of nearly 300 educators

As the new school year approaches, Lithuanian schools are facing a shortage of nearly 300 educators. According to data from the Employment Service, there is a critical need for 118 primary and secondary school teachers across 29 municipalities.

The highest demand for teachers is found in Klaipėda, Kaunas, and the Šalčininkai district. Specific subject shortages include mathematics (21 positions), Lithuanian language (14), music (10), history (9), physics (8), and informatics (8).

Giedrė Sinkevičė, Deputy Director of the Employment Service, noted a shift in job advertisements, stating that two-thirds of teacher vacancies involve part-time work or holding multiple positions. Additionally, there are vacancies for 44 special needs educators, 16 social pedagogues, and 55 student assistants. Shortages also persist in preschool education across 14 municipalities, with the highest demand in Vilnius, Kaunas, and the Kaunas district.
