Lithuanian Seimas establishes new national commemorative days

The Lithuanian Seimas has approved amendments to the Law on Commemorative Days, adding two new dates to the national calendar starting in 2027.

Basketball Day will be observed on April 23, marking the anniversary of the first official men's basketball match in Kaunas in 1922. Proposed by Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, the day aims to honor the sport's role in fostering national identity and physical activity.

Additionally, September 17 will be recognized as Lithuania's Day of Accession to the United Nations. This date commemorates Lithuania's admission to the UN in 1991, a milestone symbolizing the international recognition of the country's restored sovereignty. The proposal was introduced by Remigijus Motuzas, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The legislative changes passed with 84 votes in favor, one against, and eight abstentions.
