Lithuanian Seimas approves housing subsidy changes for young families

The Lithuanian Seimas has approved amendments to the law regarding financial incentives for young families purchasing their first home. The proposal, introduced by Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, aims to support families as they grow.

Under current regulations, if a family sells their first home within five years of acquisition, they must typically repay the state subsidy. The new amendment creates an exception: if a family has one or more children within those first five years and moves to a larger home within the same municipality, they will not be required to return the subsidy.

To qualify for this exception, families must provide the Ministry of Social Security and Labour with a notarized purchase and sale agreement for the new property. If passed, these changes are expected to take effect on January 1, 2027.
