Lithuanian Seimas begins autumn session with major defense and social agenda

The Lithuanian Seimas is set to begin its autumn session with a massive legislative agenda comprising over 550 draft laws. Key priorities include strengthening national defense and security, with a commitment to fund defense at no less than 5% of GDP, including 0.25% for aid to Ukraine.

A major constitutional objective for this session is the potential amendment of Article 137, which currently prohibits the presence of foreign military bases and weapons of mass destruction on national territory. This move is intended to ensure full NATO deterrence and defense capabilities. Additionally, the parliament aims to approve an updated National Security Strategy.

The government's proposed initiatives focus on a “safe person in a secure state” doctrine. This includes infrastructure for the German brigade, expanding air defense, and enhancing social security through measures such as free primary school meals, housing support reforms, and family policy packages to encourage birth rates. Other legislative focuses include energy price regulations, public procurement simplification, and the establishment of a free economic zone in Visaginas.
