Lithuanian Seimas debates declassifying former KGB collaborator data

The Lithuanian Seimas is currently considering legislative amendments proposed by Remigijus Žemaitaitis regarding the declassification of data concerning former KGB collaborators. The proposed changes suggest that from January 1, 2028, the data from confessions made by former KGB collaborators should be made public.

Politician A. Veryga stated that the issue of declassification has remained unresolved for over 30 years, suggesting that political hesitation may stem from fear of the public backlash caused by revealing specific names. He emphasized that the public has a right to know and that the state must fulfill its obligations.

The amendments aim to repeal a 1999 law that regulates the registration, confession, and protection of former KGB collaborators. According to the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania, these changes could affect approximately 400 working-age individuals who might face threats if their information is disclosed. While 51 Seimas members supported the amendments last December, the National Security and Defense Committee has proposed rejecting the project.
