Lithuanian Social Democrats Seek Constitutional Court Review of Ingrida Šimonytė Government Program

Members of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) parliamentary faction have begun collecting signatures to petition the Constitutional Court of Lithuania. The request asks the Court to examine whether the Seimas resolution that approved Ingrida Šimonytė’s XVIII Government program in December 2020 complied with constitutional procedures. LSDP argues that the resolution was adopted 1 hour 49 minutes before the presidential decree officially confirming the cabinet, meaning the program was considered before the government legally existed.

The party also raises similar procedural concerns about the later Mindaugas Sinkevičius government program, noting that the registration of the program project occurred before the president’s decree. LSDP deputy Orinta Leiputė stresses the need for consistent constitutional standards for all governments. The opposition requires 29 Seimas members’ signatures to submit the petition.
