Lithuanian State Patient Insurance Fund compensates medical equipment rentals

The State Patient Insurance Fund (PSDF) provides 100 percent compensation for the rental of various medical devices used for home treatment. Eligible equipment includes oxygen concentrators, artificial lung ventilation machines, insulin pumps, infusion pumps for pain relief, enteral feeding pumps, and sleep apnea devices.

Decisions regarding the allocation of these devices are not automatic. Each patient's needs are assessed individually by a medical council at a healthcare institution, based on their specific health status and medical indications. Patients can rent equipment from companies that have contracts with the State Patient Insurance Fund, which must also provide maintenance and warranty services. Companies are prohibited from charging patients extra fees for the technological features of the devices.

Insulin pumps account for the largest portion of the fund's medical equipment rental expenditures and are the most widely used. Over the last four years, the number of patients using insulin pumps has increased more than fivefold, rising from 298 to nearly 1,600. These pumps are compensated for insured children and adults with Type 1 diabetes, pregnant women or those planning pregnancy, and patients awaiting or recovering from kidney transplants.
