Lithuanian state road washed out by heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall in western Lithuania has caused significant infrastructure damage in the Kretinga district. The Kūlupis stream washed away a culvert and a road embankment on the state-importance road No. 2222, which connects Vėžaičiai, Mikoliškiai, and Kartena near the village of Abakai.

The washout has rendered the road completely impassable, cutting off access to Abakai Lurdas. The Kartena eldership has warned drivers to avoid the section and seek alternative routes. While the road is managed by the company Via Lietuva, the extent of the damage requires an assessment of the remaining embankment stability and the capacity of the culvert before repairs can begin.

Meteorological data indicates that recent precipitation in the Plungė area reached 103.1 mm, exceeding the typical monthly average for September. This surge in water volume has caused local streams to flow with increased force, overwhelming existing drainage infrastructure.
