Lithuania's centralized heating systems face technological modernization

While centralized heating in Lithuania is often associated with Soviet-era infrastructure and high costs, experts suggest the technology is entering a new stage of modernization. Dr. Artur Rogoža, an associate professor at Vilnius Tech, argues that the system must evolve to utilize modern capabilities rather than being viewed as a relic of the past.

Drawing parallels to Northern European leaders like Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, Rogoža notes that centralized systems can efficiently integrate local and renewable energy sources. Following a decade of expanding biofuels to enhance energy security and reduce gas dependency, the next phase of development will focus on increasing efficiency through smart technologies, heat pumps, heat storage, and the capture of excess energy that is currently wasted.

Despite these technological advancements, heating costs remain a significant concern for residents.
