Lithuania's Secret Prison Probe Escalates Amid Legal Scrutiny

Lithuanian authorities continue a pre‑trial investigation into a suspected secret detention centre, known as the CŽV prison, after the European Court of Human Rights ruled against the country in a related case. The Prosecutor General's Office has sent cooperation requests to foreign states, while the prime minister’s office says it trusts independent law‑enforcement bodies and sees no need for a new political process.

Parliament’s 2009 inquiry by the National Security and Defence Committee concluded that conditions existed to charge individuals, though evidence of detainees actually being held in Lithuania was lacking. Opposition figures, including Democratic Union leader Virginijus Sinkevičius and Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas, have called for a fresh investigation, whereas Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys and the presidential office question its necessity. The case remains the third ECHR ruling concerning alleged unlawful detention of Saudi‑linked individuals on Lithuanian soil.
