Litoral Alentejano user commissions demand public service reinforcements

User commissions in the Litoral Alentejano region have issued a list of demands for the reinforcement of public services, to be submitted to the Government and political parties in the Assembly of the Republic. The demands, outlined in a 2027 manifesto, highlight critical limitations in access to the National Health Service, public education, transport, postal services, and justice.

In the healthcare sector, the commissions report that 35,000 users lack a family doctor and that the Litoral Alentejano Local Health Unit (ULSLA) is short approximately 100 nurses. They also noted a lack of pediatric specialists in emergency care and a reliance on temporary staffing agencies to maintain emergency services at the Litoral Alentejano Hospital in Santiago do Cacém.

Proposed solutions include the construction of a maternity ward, the permanent placement of pediatricians for 24-hour coverage, and the implementation of incentives to attract and retain health professionals. The document also calls for the reopening of several health extensions and convalescence units within the region.
