Litter Accumulation Plagues Široki Brijeg and Poklonci Recreation Areas

In Široki Brijeg, Bosnia and Herzegovina, a 1990 photograph documented streets overwhelmed by uncollected waste, producing strong odors and forcing pedestrians to avoid affected zones. At Poklonci, a popular recreation spot on the shores of Krupačko Lake near Nikšić, Montenegro, recent visitors have left piles of bags, plastic bottles, cans and other debris. Local anglers and the president of the youth ecological society warned that such litter threatens the lake’s water quality, creates illegal dumping sites, spreads micro‑plastics and undermines the area's natural appeal. Officials have been urged to enforce stricter penalties and raise environmental awareness.
