Little House on the Prairie: set demolition and Ingalls' exit in Netflix reboot
Michael Landon, the star and executive producer of the original Little House on the Prairie, ordered the demolition of the Walnut Grove set after NBC cancelled the series. Angered by the network’s handling, he arranged for explosives to level the town’s buildings as a final statement, with the cast arriving to find the set already destroyed.
The 2026 Netflix reboot concludes its first season with the Ingalls family forced to leave the house they barely built in Independence, Kansas. A combination of a fraudulent land deal, a prairie fire that destroyed their corn crop, and unaffordable treaty payments pushes them to abandon the settlement. The episode ends with the family boarding a wagon toward Walnut Grove, setting up the story for season 2. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine summed up the theme, saying, “La vérité, c’est qu’on ne peut pas s’en sortir seul.”
