Little Island park sits on site of historic Titanic survivor arrivals

New York City's Little Island park, located along the Hudson River, sits on a site with significant maritime history. The area encompasses the former Pier 54, which served as a landing point for over 700 survivors of the Titanic disaster.

Following the Titanic's sinking in April 1912, the rescue ship Carpathia arrived in New York on April 18, docking at Pier 54 with the survivors. While Titanic's lifeboats were brought to Pier 59, Pier 54 became a site of both reunion and mourning for families waiting for news.

The location also holds history related to the Lusitania, which departed from Pier 54 on its final voyage in May 1915 before sinking off the coast of Ireland. The site, which underwent transformation, officially reopened to the public as Little Island in 2021.
