LIV Golf faces funding shortfall as Saudi PIF may withdraw support
LIV Golf's ability to complete its 2026 season is in doubt after reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) could cease financing earlier than expected. An executive from a major LIV partner said, “Every remaining tournament is on the fence,” and added that the league “doesn't know if or when the PIF will shut off the spigot.”
Four events remain on the schedule: LIV Golf UK (July 23‑26), three U.S. tournaments—including one at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, in early August—and a team championship in Michigan at the end of August. The New Jersey event is seen as the least likely to be affected, but doubts remain about the Michigan championship. A previously planned tournament in New Orleans was cancelled in April.
The PIF, which has invested more than $6 billion in LIV Golf since its 2022 launch, announced it would end funding after this season. LIV officials are seeking new partners, considering format changes and reduced purses, while CEO Scott O’Neil says the league is sharing its business plan with prospective investors.
