LIV Golf faces potential bankruptcy filing in September
LIV Golf may file for bankruptcy protection as early as the week of September 7, according to reports from the Financial Times. The professional golf league recently laid off most of its workforce while seeking funding for its next phase, as financial backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is expected to expire at the end of the 2026 season.
Reports indicate that LIV Golf has sent settlement offers to current players regarding millions in guaranteed payments owed beyond 2026, with some initial offers amounting to only a few cents on the dollar. While PIF has invested over $5 billion since the league's 2022 launch, it has reportedly been reluctant to provide further funding, though it may provide a bankruptcy loan of less than $100 million.
The league's long-term viability faces additional scrutiny regarding its ability to attract top-tier talent. As veteran players age and consider other tours, the decision of star golfer Jon Rahm regarding his future whereabouts is seen as a critical factor for the league's potential evolution or survival.
