LIV Golf faces uncertain future following bankruptcy filing
LIV Golf is at a critical crossroads as it navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A U.S. federal bankruptcy court in New Jersey has conditionally approved a restructuring agreement between the league and BC Partners. This deal includes a potential $300 million in loan and investment funding, with an initial support amount of $4 million, to provide a financial foundation for the league's potential relaunch.
The proposed new ownership structure would distribute 52.5% of equity to players, 45% to BC Partners and other investors, and 2.5% to management. However, the league faces significant hurdles, including a mass exodus of star players. Notable golfers such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson have reportedly declined to participate in the new model. Additionally, the DP World Tour has announced it will not grant membership to LIV Golf players starting in 2027.
Professional golfer Rory McIlroy criticized the league's management, stating that while the concept had merit, the execution resulted in a massive waste of capital. LIV Golf must now decide by the end of the month whether to cease operations or launch a new league, with a player registration deadline set for the 26th to determine its viability.
