LIV Golf navigates bankruptcy as DP World Tour sets return conditions
LIV Golf is navigating a period of significant restructuring following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Despite the financial uncertainty, reports indicate the league has secured enough verbal commitments from players to proceed with its plans for 2027, which may help secure necessary future funding.
As players face a deadline to pledge support, the DP World Tour has indicated it is exploring ways to accommodate returning players. However, rejoining the European circuit would not be automatic. Returning players must meet specific conditions, including being free of conflicting contractual obligations and complying with tour membership regulations. Some reports suggest that even if players return, they might be denied access to lucrative Rolex Series events.
Individual players are also seeking clarity on their professional futures. Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has requested through US bankruptcy court that his existing agreement with LIV Golf be confirmed as ended or terminated to allow him greater freedom with sponsors and tournament organizers. This comes amid news that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund may stop funding the league after the current season.
