LIV Golf players seek over $100 million from Saudi PIF
More than 10 LIV Golf players, including two-time major champion Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson, are seeking over $100 million from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The group is demanding payments owed under original contracts or through severance agreements following the PIF’s decision to withdraw support for the league in April.
According to reports, the PIF initially offered “2 cents on the dollar” for unpaid contracts, a proposal the players' cohort is expected to reject. The legal dispute comes as the league transitions to a new iteration, LIV 2.0, with a deadline for player commitments. Several high-profile golfers, including Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter, and Tom McKibbin, have already announced they will not return to the tour.
David Cornwell, the lawyer representing the players, stated that the athletes made “career-altering decisions” based on promises from the PIF to keep the league viable. He noted that the players' future involvement with the reconfigured tour will depend on how the PIF manages the conclusion of the league's initial phase.
