Live-service gaming sector faces decline and cancellations
The video game industry is experiencing a significant shift as the live-service model faces increasing instability. Major publishers are cancelling projects, and many new titles are failing to maintain player engagement. Data indicates that by the end of January 2025, 15 of the 19 major new live-service games launched that year had lost more than 80% of their initial playerbase. Notable titles affected include Persona 5: The Phantom X, Runescape: Dragonwilds, and Dune: Awakening.
Industry leaders are feeling the impact of this downturn. Sega recently cancelled its mysterious ‘Super Game’ following the weak performance of free-to-play initiatives like Sonic Rumble Party. Similarly, a Bloomberg report noted that PlayStation has halted or cancelled the development of over a dozen live-service games over the last decade. This contraction raises questions about the future of the profitable battle pass era and whether the industry can sustain its previous growth without the ‘forever game’ model.
