Live video streaming platforms and technical architectures

The landscape of live video streaming involves both specialized platform selection and complex underlying technical architectures. Streaming platforms are categorized by their function, distinguishing between destination platforms that host discovery and discussion, and production tools like Vimeo, Brightcove, and Wowza that provide delivery and ownership control.

Technically, the streaming pipeline consists of five primary stages: ingest, transcode, package, CDN, and client. The ingest stage typically utilizes protocols such as the widely used RTMP or the modern, UDP-based SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) developed by Haivision. The process ensures that high-resolution content can be delivered to massive concurrent audiences through distributed systems engineering.
