LiveHaptics project enables Steam Controller to convert audio into haptic feedback
A developer known as FamBoy32 has created LiveHaptics, an open-source program designed to transform system audio into real-time haptic feedback for the Steam Controller. The software intercepts audio signals from a computer and converts them into vibrations, allowing users to feel music, movies, and game sounds through the controller's vibration motors.
This project offers significant potential for accessibility, particularly for deaf or hard-of-hearing gamers. By converting sound into tactile sensations, the tool allows users to experience audio cues even in games that do not natively support such features. The software is compatible with Windows and Linux and supports connections via USB, Bluetooth, or the Valve Steam Link/Puck.
Users can customize signal parameters and select specific audio channels to tailor the haptic experience. While the Steam Controller is increasingly difficult to acquire, the project has gained attention on platforms like Reddit for its ability to turn a hardware curiosity into a meaningful assistive technology.
