Liver health: Recognizing early signs of organ damage

The liver is a vital organ responsible for blood purification, fighting infections, and aiding digestion. While it is the only organ capable of self-regulation following damage, early detection of dysfunction is critical.

Key symptoms of liver damage include jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to bilirubin accumulation. Other indicators include swelling in the abdomen or limbs caused by fluid retention, increased bruising, and difficulty with blood clotting due to reduced protein production.

Additional symptoms may include skin itching, changes in digestion—such as pale stools and dark urine—and potential complications involving the kidneys or thyroid gland. In some instances, liver damage may present no immediate symptoms.
