Liver health risks: Medication abuse and sleep habits

Dr. Luo Guanhong, Deputy Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Pancreatology at Xijing Hospital in Xi'an, China, has identified several habits that damage liver health. While staying up late is a well-known risk factor that disrupts the liver's biological clock—specifically during its peak functional window between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.—other behaviors can be even more detrimental.

One major concern is the abuse of medications. This includes the indiscriminate use of both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as supplements, without following professional medical guidance or recommended dosages. Dr. Luo noted that the misuse of painkillers and antibiotics is particularly common among busy, high-pressure younger populations. Because the liver is the body's primary detoxification organ responsible for metabolizing most drugs, improper medication use places significant strain on its functions, potentially leading to hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and liver cancer.
