Liverpool and Chelsea target key defensive and midfield reinforcements

Liverpool FC is evaluating the permanent signing of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo, who is currently on loan from FC Barcelona. Araujo has performed strongly in the Premier League, appearing in five matches and contributing to a defensive record where the club has not conceded a goal during his minutes on the pitch. While Liverpool holds a €55 million purchase option, Fenway Sports Group's transfer policies may influence the final decision.

In preparation for the upcoming seasons, Liverpool is also scouting Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, whose contract is set to expire in 2027.

Separately, Chelsea FC is actively seeking defensive and midfield reinforcements under manager Xabi Alonso. The club is monitoring Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov for potential moves in the winter or summer windows. In midfield, Chelsea is targeting British players Alex Scott of Bournemouth and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace to bolster their creative options for the 2026-2027 campaign.
