Liverpool appoints Andoni Iraola as manager and signals frugal transfer policy

Liverpool Football Club has officially confirmed former Athletic Bilbao coach Andoni Iraola as its new manager, succeeding Arne Slot. The appointment follows an internal review and is presented as a move to ensure stability and tactical continuity, with Iraola expected to implement a high‑pressing, possession‑based style.

After spending close to £450 million on signings during Slot’s tenure, the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have warned that the upcoming transfer window will be markedly restrained. Liverpool, which finished fifth last season, will target only a handful of players who fit Iraola’s system, while considering the departure of long‑serving figures such as Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. The strategy emphasises maximising the existing squad’s talent rather than pursuing marquee acquisitions.
